Where is He?

There is a path which no fowl knoweth,

and which the vultures eye hath not seen:

The lions whelps have not trodden it,

nor the fierce lion passed by it...

But where shall wisdom be found?

and where is the place of understanding?

Man knoweth not the price thereof;

neither is it found in the land of the living.

The depth saith, It is not in me:

and the sea saith,

It is not with me.

It cannot be gotten for gold,

neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.

Whence then cometh wisdom?

and where is the place of understanding?

Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living,

and kept close from the fowls of the air.

Destruction and death say,

We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.

From the Book of Job

Where is God to be found?

If I look to the heights

mine understanding is confounded

by the magnitude of the expanse.

If I look to the clouds my vision is obscured.

If I seek to pierce the darkness of the night sky

the deep is too great for me.

If I look to the sun mine eye is put off

I find I cannot look upon it

and I cannot approach.

But where is he?

Above the heavens? In the deep?

Under the earth? Beyond the stars?

No.

I can only find him within.

That is the only place

that I am sure where he dwelleth.

And his word is nigh- even on my lips.

And in my heart.

And his breath sustains me.

So that understanding and wisdom become

like a lush landscape of heaven in my very heart.

Yes, that is the only place I am sure to find him.

Jesus himself pointed us in that direction saying,

Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there!

for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

                           Luke 17.21

God is there in the midst of the darkness.

And just as with the daystar

he causes the light to shine out of that darkness.

We have also a more sure word of prophecy;

whereunto ye do well that ye take heed,

as unto a light that shineth in a dark place,

until the day dawn,

and the day star arise in your hearts...

                                        2 Peter 1.19

Our journey is inward.

Our way is found as we plumb

the depths of our own hearts.

That was the true Light, which lighteth

every man that cometh into the world.
